Windesheim students tackle enforced disappearances issue in Philippines

The Philippines has a long history of enforced or involuntary disappearances. They don’t just go missing, they get kidnapped by government installed state agents. According to the latest data at least 1996 people are documented as missing but the number of reported victims is a lot higher. The reasons for this are unclear, which is why a group of Windesheim Honours College (WHC) students are travelling to the Philippines to help the human rights organizations there.

The mystery of the disappearing Filipinos

The Philippines is not only a land with a beautiful landscape. The political situation is devastating and opponents of the former regime need to fear for their lives. Human rights get more and more oppressed by the government and there is still a gap in the system what makes enforced disappearances hard to stop.

The case of Jonas Burgos

Roughly twelve years ago, Farmers-activist Jonas Burgos from the Philippines was eating at a restaurant when military men entered and took him. He has never been seen since, leaving his mother and the rest of his family without a clue as to what exactly happened to him. Even now the search still goes on but without result; and Jonas is not the only person to go missing.
